Prof Dave Petley, Director of IHRR and the International Landslide Centre, has been keeping a database of landslide-induced fatalities over the years. I thought it would be of interest to some readers of this blog to post some of the charts here as the data that Dave released on his blog is startling to say the least. While the total number of deaths caused by landslides in 2010 is less than previous years, as there were few ‘large-scale, landslide triggering earthquakes’ in 2010. But heavy rainfall was a large factor in causing landslides that killed people last year. Dave has recorded 83,275 landslide fatalities since September 2002.
The first chart below shows the number of landslide fatalities in different countries, with China well above the rest and the second shows the number of fatalities per geographic region.

Dr Petley is to be lauded for his constant efforts to
record and disseminate landslide information and
statistics.
We are also interested in the remediation efforts and mitigation programs undertaken in these countries, plus
the associated costs.
For example how do the New Zealander farming community and others, mitigate against giant boulder rockfalls ?
Regards.
